Background of the Study:
Maternal health programs are fundamental in reducing child mortality rates and enhancing overall community health. In Nnewi North, various initiatives have been implemented to improve prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care services (Chukwu, 2023). These programs are designed to ensure that mothers receive timely and adequate medical attention, thereby reducing complications that can lead to high infant mortality. Despite these efforts, challenges such as limited access to quality healthcare, inadequate funding, and socio-cultural barriers persist, affecting program effectiveness (Ekwueme, 2024). Recent research underscores the importance of community outreach, healthcare worker training, and improved health infrastructure in reducing child mortality (Nnorom, 2025). This study critically examines the link between maternal health programs and child mortality, aiming to identify gaps and propose strategies to enhance the efficacy of these programs, thereby promoting healthier communities (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the implementation of maternal health programs in Nnewi North, child mortality rates remain high due to factors such as insufficient healthcare infrastructure and socio-cultural constraints. This study explores the underlying issues hampering program effectiveness and seeks solutions to improve maternal and child health outcomes (Ifeanyi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of maternal health programs.
To identify challenges affecting program outcomes.
To recommend interventions to reduce child mortality.
Research Questions:
How effective are current maternal health programs in reducing child mortality?
What challenges hinder the success of these programs?
What strategies can improve maternal and child health outcomes?
Research Hypotheses:
Maternal health programs significantly reduce child mortality.
Inadequate healthcare infrastructure compromises program success.
Community engagement enhances the effectiveness of maternal health interventions.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant in highlighting the critical role of maternal health programs in reducing child mortality. The findings will assist policymakers and healthcare providers in refining program strategies, ensuring better maternal care and improved child survival rates (Uzo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Maternal Health Programs: Initiatives focused on improving healthcare services for mothers.
Child Mortality: The death of children under a specific age, often before the age of five.
Healthcare Infrastructure: The physical and organizational structures needed to deliver healthcare services.
